It’s understandable that you don’t look forward to choosing tile and generally decorative bathroom finishes, as it puts you on the spot. And that’s because you have to keep clear in mind the combinations of colors you will use, how much each color will be used and how you will combine the ceramic tile designs chosen for a modern, pleasant and inspired result.
The great variety of finishes available on the market complicates things even more. When you have the impression that you have found the perfect model, you will find another three as equally as attracting and with a decorative potential that makes it difficult for you to decide. The following are a few modern combinations of tile that make it easier for you to decide how you would like to use them in your bathroom.
Simple bicolor tile installation
The most common combination of two tile colors is that in which the lower half of the wall is covered with tiles matching with the floor tile and the upper one is covered with tile that is usually lighter in color. But this can easily be reinterpreted, you can reverse the color position or you can enjoy the tile floor in a lighter color, matching the brighter tiles or even the ceiling. This latter solution is especially recommended for small bathrooms, as a white floor or a lighter color will make the space seem larger.
Although not necessarily, you can separate the two colors used to finish the walls with a decorative band. It can match the sanitary ware, the flooring, it can be a chromatic combination of basic colors, or it may have a lighter color, but one that will match the other elements of the decor.
Accent tile band
Another combining option involves inserting a darker portion of tile between the lighter tiles. In other words, imagine that the walls in your bathroom are divided into three horizontal parts: the portion located in the middle can be covered with a tile in a darker color, and the other two will be covered with tiles in a lighter color. In this way you will get the effect of an accent band that will surround the entire room. The floor can have any of the two basic colors.
Areas accentuated with decorative tile
This is one of the most popular combinations of tile in recent years. To get it, you need a simple design that you will use for covering the largest bathroom surfaces and one or even two models of differently colored tiles or a beautiful decorative print that you will use to accentuate key areas: the sink, the toilet bowl, the bathtub or the shower. Normally, ceramic tile collections have just various simple tiles and a few decorative prints, so you won’t find it difficult to find the two models that fit perfectly. However, do not overuse the accent effect in a small bathroom if you don’t want to make it seem crowded.
Horizontal stripes
This version is particularly suitable for small and narrow bathrooms and involves the creation of horizontal stripes across the entire width of the walls or at least on the narrowest walls. To get this model you will need at least two tile designs: one in a light color and one more pronounced in chromatic terms. If you like multicolored models you can use three, four or even more shades of the same color or even different colors to create a series of horizontal stripes.
The floor can have any of the colors you decide to use for the walls, it can be white or it can be covered with a geometric tile in black and white or black and gray for an extra powerful effect.
Vertical stripes
If your bathroom is not only small, but also has a low ceiling, you can choose to decorate the walls with vertical stripes with at least two tile colors or with a mosaic. But to make sure that you don’t obtain a boring model, create strips in up to two areas of the room: for example in the bathtub and sink area or in the toilet area. Avoid this model in very narrow bathrooms, as vertical lines will make it seem even narrower.
One color for each area of interest
If you want, you can use 3 colors for the bathroom tile – one for each area of interest, even a different one for the floor. It’s true that this is a bold solution and is especially recommended in the case of spacious bathrooms, but it leads to a cheerful and dynamic bathroom space. Basically, after you’ve decided how many colors you’ll be using (it’s good to limit yourself to a maximum of 3), you have to decide which area you’ll allocate to each of them. For example, if you choose white, green and orange tile, you can use the white for the floor and most of the walls, the orange to accentuate the bathtub and the green to accentuate the toilet. And to tie the three colors together, you can intersect them in the floor.
If you choose a bicolor finish, things are even simpler: two walls and the floor can be covered in one color and the other two walls in the other.
Patchwork tile
Another modern option you can choose is patchwork tile. For this you need a model / type / size of ceramic tile in a wide variety of colors to interlock and combine as you wish for the floor or for a portion of the wall. The other walls, in this case, should be covered with one of the colors present in the patchwork decor.
