1.Choose a quality decorative plaster
The secret of successful finishes lies in the technique of their application, but also in the quality of the products used. As a result, the first step you have to make to add aesthetic value to your home is to choose a premium product. There are various types of decorative plaster on the market, from the cheapest to the premium one, as follows: acrylic, silicone, silicate or carbon. Each of these types of decorative plaster has advantages and disadvantages, but it is recommended that when choosing, you opt for those which, although they have a higher price, are more qualitative (especially if we are talking about ornamental plasters used for the exterior, which must be durable and weather resistant).
2.Prepare the surface for application
In order for the decorative plaster to adhere to the wall surface, certain steps are required prior to its application. First, the walls must be cleaned of any traces of dirt, mold or residue. Afterward, certain repairs are required if the surface of the walls has slight imperfections.
If necessary, the walls will also be sanded. These operations should lead to the creation of a smooth, flat surface suitable for the application of decorative plaster.
3.Apply the wall primer
Now that the walls are perfectly smooth and clean, it’s time to apply the primer. It has the role of creating a uniform surface for the level of absorption, acting as a protective film against stains. After applying the primer, it takes 24 hours for the decorative plaster layer to be applied.
4.Prepare the decorative plaster
Decorative plaster will be prepared according to the instructions on the product chosen. Most of the time, it needs to be diluted with water. Subsequently, these two substances are mixed until a homogeneous mixture is obtained. To mix them, you can use a special mixer used in the construction field.
A very important advice for those are not familiar with this process refers to the amount of product you are preparing. Because it tends to dry quickly enough, it is advisable to prepare the decorative plaster in small quantities as it is applied to the desired surface.
5.Apply the decorative plaster
The final step, the actual application of the decorative plaster, is made by following three basic movements: spreading the plaster using the specific technique required for a smooth application, leveling – which actually consists in removal of the surplus material – and the modeling, which represents the step that gives the surface the desired design. Pay attention, however, at the first step described: the plaster must not be applied in a layer thicker than 2 mm!
Decorative plasters are not a simple as painting. You can create special effects, add a particular style, or give a special feeling to a room. The color range of decorative plasters is very rich, with over 1000 shades you will surely find something unique to your liking. In addition, they influence and complement each other.
